(1732–99). The French dramatist Beaumarchais was best known as the author of two outstanding comedies of intrigue, Le Barbier de Séville (1775; The Barber of Seville) and Le Mariage de Figaro (1784; The Marriage of Figaro). Although Beaumarchais did not invent the character of the scheming valet.
