(1888–1976). German-born painter, poet, teacher, and art theoretician Josef Albers was an innovator of such post–abstract expressionist styles as color field painting and op art. After moving to the United States in 1933, Albers concentrated on several series of works that systematically explored the ambiguous relationships between the physical object of art and its psychological.
