Born in Newport, Wales, on April 5, 1942, he studied cinema and painting at the Walthamstow School of Art, and after his first artistic experiments, he organised his first exhibition of paintings in 1964 with the emblematic title of Eisenstein at the Winter Palace. In the Seventies, Greenway worked as a film editor on documentaries, continued to paint and write stories, but it was with his short features that he first obtained recognition. Towards the end of the Seventies he produced a trilogy of movies that might well be considered the manifesto of his experimental, non-narrative cinematography: A Walk Through H, Vertical Features Remake and The Falls. In all three, the borderline between film and painting is somewhat indistinct. The first, in particular, is nothing but an illustrated story of the sequence of his 92 paintings and drawings. In 1982, he presented his first full-length movie, The Draughtsman’s Contract, at the Venice Film Festival, where it was an immediate hit and made him instantly famous among the critics and public at large.
