Career: Set designer, then director for BBC TV, including episodes of Z-Cars and The Informer, 1966–67; set up production company Ridley Scott Associates, directed close to 3,000 commercials, from 1967; directed first feature, The Duellists, 1977. Awards: Special Jury Prize, Cannes Festival, for The Duellists, 1977; Venice Film Festival Award for commercial work.
